Hey there! PLEASE READ THIS!!!
I thought I'd try my hand at an english songfic, so here's Lily, James and Sirius watching Harry again as I think they're doing all the time. It's a bit AU, as in the Deathly Hallows, which is the timezone of this little songfic, Harry opens the door to the order. Here he has to meet them in the little park where he was in OOTP, because Moody thought it safer like this. No threat of watching muggles. It fitted better with what I wanted to write. And the Dursleys are still there. Harry saying goodbye is my own creation too... it's how I thought it would have gone. Anything else is cannon and the song belongs to Ministry of magic. I won't mark what I took from the book. But there are some parts of it, just not the direct words. Have fun!
"Lils? Are you alright?"
Lily Potter looked up into the concerned hazel eyes of her husband.
"Yeah" she said, smiling sadly. "I just miss him." she looked down to earth once more.
James followed her emerald gaze and sighed. Of course. It was Harry. How could it not be him? He missed him terribly as well and all, but it wasn't making it easier on them if they watched and sighed all the time.
"Lily, I know you miss him, but..."
"No buts this time, James." Lily said quietly. "I just wanna have a moment, alright? Let's watch him just for a little while."
James sighed again, how could he say no to her?
So he called Sirius and together they watched their son/godson down on earth.
Down in the little room in number 4 Privet Drive, Harry Potter was packing his stuff.
This evening he would go back to the Burrow for Bill and Fleur's wedding and then he, Hermione and Ron would go on the hunt for the Horcruxes.
"Why is he packing?" Sirius asked, confused. "I mean, yeah, he's going to the Burrow, but isn't that still a few days away?"
"I thought so, too." James nodded. "But it seems he's going sooner than we thought."
"It certainly does." Sirius said thoughtfully.
"Shush, you two." Lily hissed. "I want to hear what he says."
On Harry's small cupboard sat a little radio which was playing a tune that was like a pop song.
Harry hummed along, but when the three up in heaven listened closer they discovered that he was actually singing quietly.
"It's gonna be a different year
This is not the place for fear
I've got a job to do
Time to empty out my trunk
No more use for all this junk
I'm not going back to school..."
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE NOT GOING BACK TO SCHOOL??!!" Lily shrieked. "Of course you're going back! You need your N.E.W.T.'s! What in heavens name will you do without them?!"
"Lils, use your many brains!" Sirius shot back. "Harry can't go back!"
"What do you mean he can't? Of course he can!"
"Lily, listen." James said patiently. "You watched it too, didn't you? The session of the Death Eaters something like three weeks ago? They have the Carrows as teachers... if you can call them that.
And Snape will be headmaster. Even if he's not evil, that won't exactly help with him having to play his role."
"So what's got this to do with Harry?"
"Lily, use your brains, for god's sake!" Sirius said impatiently. "He's Harry bloody Potter! If he goes back to Hogwarts this year it is the same as if he would put a big sign to his forehead saying 'Hey I'm here, kill me now!'"
Lily flushed. Of course, how thick could she be! Why hadn't she thought of that? Oh yeah, she was too worried about his education... which he could finish later, when Hogwarts was Death-Eater-free.
She gave them an embaressed look but the two men just smiled, before they went back to watching Harry again.
Harry was just singing along with a small smile on his face.
"Hermione will be there
Thank god for Ron as well...
When the next thought came into his head, they watched the smile slowly slide off his face.
"But in the end I know it's me...
Harry threw the backpack onto his back and took the little radio with him, then went out of his small room and descended the stairs, all the time singing quietly.
"Yeah, in the end it's me..."
"Soo." he said quietly when he reached the three Dursleys in the living room, but didn't know what else to say.
What did you say to each other after 16 years of dislike?
"I'll be gone now." he said then.
Uncle Vernon looked up.
"Finally!" he sneered. "I've waited sixteen years for this."
"Trust me this feeling is mutual." Harry hissed back, while his family up in heaven bared their teeth at that rude balloon.
Aunt Petunia was an entirely different story.
She looked up too and seemed to battle with herself for a moment before coming to a conclusion and rising slowly.
Harry took a wary step back as she advanced him but stiffened in surprise when she gave him a tight hug.
It was the first time she ever did this so Harry didn't know how to react.
And his parents and godfather up in heaven shared an equally surprised look.
Vernon's aghast shout of "Petunia!" didn't help either, it just caused her to hug him tighter and Harry finally settled on cautiously hugging her back.
"Watch out, will you?" his aunt whispered quietly when she released him. "I don't want you to die. I have to make up for what I did."
Harry swallowed, then managed: "Wh-What brought this on, then?"
"I realised what you are about to do." she said quietly. "I am not as unknowing about your world as you might think. Lily wrote to me although I told her I hated her. She told me everything about the war and I think there is a new war. This Dumbledore guy said you were the one to end it or die, when he checked up on you half a year after you arrived.
But I won't go into this now. You have to go."
Harry gulped again, while Lily had tears in her eyes.
"She read them" she whispered. "I can't believe it."
Harry nodded then turned to Dudley who had got up and stood behind his mother.
"I'm sorry." he said quietly. "For... everything."
Harry knew it had cost Dudley much of his will power to do this. So he just smiled and nodded, before shaking his hand.
"Take care, Big D." he said.
Dudley smiled slightly and sat next to his mother again.
Harry nodded at Uncle Vernon, then left the house.
Just on the street he threw a look back at whathad been his home for sixteen years.
The he started down the street, again singing quietly along to the melody.
"Now I'm finally on my own
So far away from home
And I'm fighting all alone
I've got no place to call my own...
When they watched a few days later, Harry and his two friends were sitting on a table at the wedding.
"Remember that I won't force you to come, if you don't want to you can stay here." Harry said quietly.
The little radio was sitting between them and playing the same melody as it had a few ays before.
Hermione just shook her head tiredly.
Putting a hand on his arm, she said: "How often do you need to hear it? We want to come. And Harry, remember:
This is not just your burden
It's the definition of a friend
We've got all we need in my bag."
And she showed him her handbag.
A few months later Ron left them in the tent in anger.
Hermione cried for weeks, but they saw her watching Harry brooding about the horcruxes and quietly berating herself.
"Pull yourself together, girl" she muttered. "Your best friend needs you now."
And then she sang quietly along to the little radio:
"When Ron had to run and hide
And I was broken up inside
Still got a job to do now"
"Good girl" Lily nodded. "Look after your friends."
Just then they heard Harry start singing where Hermione stopped:
"Cuz I'm finally on my own
So far away from home
And I'm fighting all alone
I've got no place to call my own...
A week later, Harry dove into the freezing lake to collect Gryffindor's sword, but the locket, which he hadn't dared removing, turned against him and tried to strangle him.
Just before he drowned, someone jumped into the water and rescued him.
When they were outside, they saw, atonished, that it was Ron.
"Are you mad?"
Harry squinted at him.
"That thing would have strangled you!"
Finally, Harry was able to focus on his friend.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came back. As soon as I apparated I realized how wrong and stupid it was and I regretted leaving in the first place."
They destroyed the locket with the sword and after the horrible ghostly versions of Harry and Hermione diappeared, Ron broke down.
Harry put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Hermione cried for a week after you left, you know." he said quietly. "Maybe longer, but she didn't want me to see. Most nights we didn't even speak because with you gone..."
He visibly fished for words and Lily smiled down at him. Her son was such a sweet boy, comforting his friend like this, when it was him the image showed.
"She's like my sister" Harry said finally. "I love her like I believe I would a sister if I had one. And I'm almost sure she feels the same way about me. It's always been like that. I thought you knew."
Ron didn't respond for a long time.
"I'm sorry." he croaked finally. "I'm so sorry I left. I know I was a - a - "
Harry sqeezed his shoulder.
"Don't" he said gently. "You made up for it tonight. You came back. And got the sword. And destroyed the horcrux. And you saved my life. Without you I'd have drowned in there."
Ron gave a weak chuckle. "That makes it sound a lot cooler than it was." he said quietly.
"Stuff like this always sounds cooler than it was when you say it like this." Harry said and pulled his friend to his feet. "That's what I've been trying to tell you for years, mate."
Ron looked up and gave a weak smile and Harry smiled right back.
At the same time they both took a step forward and hugged.
Lily cooed and James and Sirius exchanged grins.
Another two friends reunited.
When they broke apart, they went back to the tent.
Hermione was furious even as Ron tried to explain:
"I was weak and I messed up
But now I'm here to fight
My deluminator has led me back"
Hermiones answer was to hit him with his own backpack.
Hermione was mad for days but finally she forgave him.
Harry just shook his head.
"Good old Ron and Hermione." he grinned the evening before they went to the Lovegoods. "Always fighting like an old married couple."
He laughed and ducked as Hermione lashed out to hit him on the back of the head.
Ron just got up and chased him around the tent, calling "Take that back, Potter!"
Harry just laughed.
Up in heaven they smiled softly. It was great to see the teenager come out of their mature son/godson sometimes. There were moments when he behaved like the teenager he should be.
The next day they went to the Lovegoods.
Harry hung back and sung quietly to the tune he had in his head since yesterday evening.
"I was prepared to fight alone
All by myself in the unknown
But my best friends would not allow it"
"Of course they wouldn't, honey." Lily said gently. "They are your friends after all."
Harry caught up to Ron and Hermione and just said:
"Now we've got a job to do."
Ron nodded.
"Now we've got a job to do"
he repeated.
Hermione just looked at them.
"We do" she said. "But don't forget
'Cuz we're finally on our own"
"Yeah" Harry mumbled.
("Finally on our own"
Hermione just continued
"We've made this place our home.
At least until this war ends" she added.
Ron looked a little sad.
"Far away from home" he muttered sadly.
"Now we'll never be alone" Harry said, throwing an arm aroung each of their shoulders. "We'll never be alone when we stay together. And after the war, we have Grimmauld Place.
We've got this place to call our own."
When Luna's dad betrayed them, James and Sirius were furious.
"How could he! I just don't understand!"
Lily looked sadly at them. "Don't try to tell me that you wouldn't do the same if we were alive and they had Harry."
That quickly shut them up.
"Finally on our own"
Harry said, smiling, while Ron still looked a little sad.
"Far away from home" he mumbled again.
Hermione gave a little smile. "But we will
Never be alone."
A few days later they were captured by snatchers and brought to Malfoy Manor where they just barely escaped.
That escapade ended with the death of the third quarter of the original marauders, although James, Sirius and Remus down on earth didn't count Peter Pettigrew as a marauder anymore.
And the little house-elf, who had helped Harry all along, Dobby was his name, was stapped in the tummy by Bellatrix which made Sirius even madder
Harry buried him near by Shell Cottage and while they stayed with Bill & Fleur, they talked with Ollivander and Griphook, the goblin they had rescued.
On the last evening at Shell Cottage Remus came and told them, beaming, that Tonks had given birth.
"I have a son!" he called happily. "We've called him Ted after his grandfather."
All of them smiled, even the onesup in heaven.
"He bloody well deserves it." James said and ducked Lily's smack over the head at his language. "He's been through so much."
"Congratulations, Remus!" Hermione squealed. "You've got to show us a picture sometime!"
"I will." Remus promised, before he went around the table and hugged Harry who had just congratulated him as well.
"Thank you, Harry. But I've got a question and Tonks and myself have talked long about that."
"Fire away." Harry said, glad that their fight was buried.
"Will you be the godfather?"
Harry was rendered speechless and Lily squealed.
"Aww Rem, you are so sweet. Making Harry godfather... thank you."
"Stepping in my footsteps, are you Prongslet" Sirius grinned knowingly. "Let me tell you being gordfather is the best thing in the world."
"Shut up." James hissed. "I wanna hear his reply."
They went quiet and listened as Hermione, Luna and Fleur said "Aww" while the men just grinned at him.
Harry cleared his throat.
"Of course" he said, his voice a bit raspy as if holding back tears. "I will. Thank you, Moony."
Remus beamed at Harry's use of his old nickname.
"No, thank you, Harry. Thank you for being godfather. Tonks and I are sure we couldn't find anyone better."
Harry swallowed. "Thanks." he said and was glad when Remus released him and toasted to little Teddy Lupin.
The next day they broke into Gringotts, to which Lily screeched.
"Are they insane? What about the goblins? Not to mention what that would do to the goblin-wizards-relationship. They are already wary, those three don't need to break what little trust they have."
James and Sirius just shared an incredilous glance.
"They are mad." Sirius said in awe.
"Barkin'" James nodded. "I always knew they were mad. But I never thought they are this mad."
When Remus and Tonks both joined them up in heaven, they all cried. They cried for the many death in the final battle, they cried for Harry who had lost the last link to his parents and most importantly, they cried for little Teddy, the small baby who was now parentless. Another war orphan.
The same evening Harry stood on the bridge to the destroyed castle, snapping the elder wand in two and throwing the pieces away.
Then he sang to that familiar tune.
"Call our own..."
And his voice carried through the rift underneath him and echoed back to him
Call our own...
Call our own...
And as they watched Harry raise Teddy like the boy's parents had wished in their will, they all knew Teddy would grow into a very fine young man.
And as they watched Harry marry Ginny and having their sons and daughter, they all knew what was obvious:
He was happy.
